Online Live Course Tuesday 5th April 2022

10-12pm UK Time 

An introduction to supporting children and adults with severe and profound intellectual disabilities with bereavement, loss and grief.

During this 2 hour course you learn about how to support people with severe and profound intellectual disabilities with the issues of bereavement and grief. Held on Zoom and led with sensitivity and compassion by Sarah Helton, an experienced practitioner and trainer and bereavement specialist.

The course covers:

• What is grief?

• How do people with severe and profound intellectual disabilities communicate grief?

• Activities and resources for supporting grieving individuals with severe and profound intellectual disabilities.

• Advice and self-care for those supporting grieving individuals with severe and profound intellectual disabilities.

• The language of loss, death, bereavement and grief.

You will take away tools and strategies that:

• Can be used in home, education and adult services and settings

• Can be used to support both children and adults

• Do not require cognitive and language skills and abilities

• Do not require any expensive, specialist equipment

You will get:

• A live 2 hour course held on Zoom (with a short screen break)

• Opportunity for questions and discussion throughout and to stay for further discussion between 12-12.30

• Research evidence and theory, as well as suggestions for how you can best support those you love and care for

• A copy of the slides and a certificate of attendance 

Sarah Helton is a consultant, author and trainer in the field of bereavement, specialising in the needs of people with learning disabilities. Her work includes being a training facilitator for the national child bereavement charities Winston’s Wish and Child Bereavement UK.

Sarah has worked in the Special Educational Needs/Disabilities (SEND) field for 25 years, as a Deputy Headteacher, Assistant Headteacher, Teacher, Local Authority Education Officer and Educational Publisher.
